Mike Portnoy lahir pada 20 April 1967 dan dibesarkan di Long Beach, New York, di mana minatnya pada musik dimulai pada usia dini.

Mike mengatakan bahwa pengaruh terbesar adalah Rush, drummer dari Neil Peart dan almarhum Frank Zappa.
